There’s been an air of disappointment with some after the release of EA Sports FIFA. Comments of how there’s not enough change to warrant paying full price, complaints on losing right at the last second to a goal that would never be possible in real life, moans on the fluidity of controlling a player that has unnerved some of the FIFA faithful. So much so that there’s a steady flow of copies starting to build up at the local CEX as people part ways early.
Pro Evolution Soccer kind of suffered the same fate when the now old gen took pride of place. Losing it’s identity in the emerging market, PES tried to change in what made it great and in doing so lost itself as a title. Last year started to herald the resurgance of PES as a franchise and now Pro Evolution Soccer 2015, the first new gen soccer title from Konami has placed itself firmly back on top of the pile with a very slick offering that trumps the FIFA title in virtually every aspect.
PES 2015 splits the development workload between studios in the U.K. and Japan to help bridge the gap for players that felt ‘Winning Eleven’ was moving away from their expectations with focus shifting to the tense gameplay and the returning to the core total control and unrestricted gameplay of what made the title stand tall in the first place. From the very beginning of a game you know that Konami have absolutely nailed the fluidity of a match and have given you a real balance in the control of all aspects from the game. A slight move here and there of the thumbsticks will have your player moving in tune to your stick movements and animations are registered in such a way to allow immediate movement on and off the ball as well as handling the finer points of ball control to near perfection. Timely through balls, holding it up, quick one twos are all very accessible and the purity of football is there to enjoy without the silly trick stuff to help open up some space. Pro Evolution Soccer even lets you know that proper tactics of the real teams will also come into play and thinking that you can rely on the sprint button and a few tricks to get you a goal will be punished very quickly.
Full pitch AI has also been implemented so that every decision and every movement is reacted to by all of the players on the pitch. Players will make runs, take on players, mark opponents and find space, even off the screen, to complete a more realistic playing environment. The ability to direct team mates to close down players as well as close ball control at the touch of a button enable you to be a little more skillful in your play and the age old adage of sometimes you need to go back to move forward ring true here as you pass the ball around to manipulate opponents around you.
The FOX Engine from last year’s edition has been used better than ever to add depth and realism in Pro Evolution 2015′s look with natural, real time lighting enhancing the beauty of the game. With over a thousand players recreated this year in terms of look and also recreating playing styles and reactions to certain decisions give a new realism to PES. Ronaldo looks like Ronaldo but more importantly plays like him too with little jinks and ball control that’ll turn your head. Playing with the Bayern Munich team, for example, allowed me to see first hand the looks and movements of such greats like Robben with his fierce runs and strikes, Alonso striking from outside the area and strong midfield play and Ribery menacing from the wings, each with decisions dictating their mind set and how they play.
Players play how they do in real life, stadiums and crowds can also affect a home game and teams play to their real teams strengths and weaknesses depending on where they’re playing. The 12th man at home seems to give energy to that team, playing with purpose and a lift that you may not see away, the ability to change tactics on the fly make for a more compelling game as a more traditional attacking team can now be made to counter attack or break on the wing rather than a pass steady offence trying to open up channels through the middle for example.
Unfortunately at the time of review the servers weren’t switched on so the online and connective modes couldn’t be played including MyTeam, PES’s answer to Ultimate Team as well as the online leagues, quick matches and full on 11 vs 11 lobbies. The offline and accessible modes proved to be a dream, including an improved Master League to micro manage every aspect of your team’s progress, Become a Legend mode that will help you develop a player, training modes etc. There is a crazy amount of content to get you teeth into, and although presented in a sometimes confusing tile system, PES 2015 has all of your favourites pinned to the home page for easy access.
